A job posting for an upcoming Battlefield game mentions the creation of a single-player campaign as one of the duties of the position, which seems to be getting more attention than in the last few titles.
The Battlefield franchise has a long history of solid single-player offerings. The Bad Company spin-off series was particularly loved for its single-player stories, but titles like BF 3 and BF One are also fondly remembered for this aspect. Today, however, the cost of creating single-player campaigns and the demand for high-quality and accessible multiplayer games has seen the series leave this legacy behind. However, this may change in the relatively near future.
A job advertisement for a position at Electronic Arts’ new Battlefield Seattle studio, which is believed to be focused on making the franchise’s single-player campaigns, has helped paint a clearer picture. The job covers a Design Director position, and the first task listed is to “define and lead the design efforts required to create a best-in-class single-player campaign experience”.
In other words, this role will work specifically on Battlefield’s single-player campaigns in the future.
For further clarification, a section of the Design Director role overview further describes the effort that BF Seattle Studio is working on. According to this role, the role is tasked with “embracing the core principles of the franchise” and ensuring that they “permeate every layer of the masterfully designed single-player campaign”. As such, the Design Director will lead the development of a “compelling campaign” from concept to completion.
The fact that the new Battlefield Seattle studio is working on a single-player campaign is not entirely surprising, but it is unusual to see such an emphasis on it. In April, Lianne Cruz’s Twitter post confirmed that the studio had hired her as animation director. Cruz, however, referred to the team as Battlefield Campaign Seattle Studio, adding the word “campaign” as if that’s how the team was described to her.
This was even confirmed by Battlefield game director Marcus Lehto, who responded and welcomed him to the team.
Although single-player campaigns were only missing from Battlefield 2042, many fans will be happy to see that future franchise games will again emphasise them. If anything, the fact that an entire campaign is included in a full-priced game will make customers feel like they’re getting their money’s worth.
