PlayStation Plus Essential: What Are We Getting In September?

The last day of summer is a bit of apt timing, as Sony has recently ushered in a new era, and it may not be a bright one.

We’re not thinking about how the PlayStation Plus has been transformed into three subscription tiers (the entry-level Essential is the same as the old original), but that Sony has raised prices everywhere outside the US, with Japan seeing the price of PlayStation 5 Standard Edition and PlayStation 5 Digital Edition go up from September 15.

And there were no vast surprises because, once again, there was a leak about the PlayStation Plus Essential game lineup for the next month. Since so far, it was almost spot-on what we could read on the French Dealabs site, sometimes days before the official announcement, based on this post by billbil-kun (who Sony can’t seem to stop), we might have learned about the list early. Regarding the leak, we may say Sony deserves it after its price increase move.

Interestingly, we’re only getting a native PlayStation 5 version of one game this time. This is all the sadder because it has been typical recently for two out of three titles to have it simultaneously. The first game on the list is Need For Speed: Heat from 2019, the last game from Ghost Games before the license was returned to Criterion by Electronic Arts, and the “ghost” studio was downgraded to a subsidiary studio (EA Gothenburg). The second is a PlayStation 5-only game, TOEM, which features photography instead of racing. The third is a fighting game, Granblue Fantasy Versus for PlayStation 4 from ArcSys (Arc System Works). PlayStation Blog has also confirmed the list of games: the leaks were not wrong this time.

August games are still available until September 5 (Yakuza: Like A Dragon – PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4; Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1+2 Cross-Gen Deluxe Bundle – PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4; Little Nightmares – PlayStation 4). August titles are making the rounds for September.

The company also listed the PlayStation Plus Extra additions: Deathloop (PS5), Assassin’s Creed Origins (PS4), Watch Dogs 2 (PS4), Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2 (PS4), Spiritfarer: Farewell Edition (PS4), Chicory: A Colorful Tale (PS4), Monster Energy Supercross – The Official Videogame 5 (PS5, PS4), Alex Kidd in Miracle World DX (PS5, PS4), Rabbids Invasion: The Interactive TV Show (PS4), Rayman Legends (PS4), Scott Pilgrim vs. The World: The Game – Complete Edition (PS4). Finally, the PlayStation Plus Premium list: Syphon Filter 2 (PS1), The Sly Collection (PS3), Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time (PS3), Bentley’s Hackpack (PS3), Toy Story 3 (PSP), Kingdom of Paradise (PSP). The PS Plus Extra/Premium games will be available from September 20!
