Ezra Miller Remains In Dalíland, But Director Has Serious Concerns

MOVIE NEWS – Mary Harron says Ezra Miller was very professional on the set of Daliland but hopes to seek professional help after recent headlines.

It hasn’t been a good year for actor Ezra Miller, who has continually generated controversy by being arrested multiple times for various crimes in different states. With all the negative publicity surrounding Miller, rumours have been flying that Warner Bros. Discovery may eventually shelve The Flash, similar to what they have already done with Batgirl. This reportedly led to a meeting with the producers to discuss the film, as well as Miller publicly apologizing for their actions, stating that they have since begun treatment for their mental health.

As there have been rumours before that The Flash would be axed, there has also been speculation that their minor role in Dalíland could be cancelled.

Ahead of the film’s premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), director Mary Harron (American Psycho) spoke about Miller’s role in the Salvador Dalí biopic. Although the film primarily stars Sir Ben Kingsley as the adult Dalí, Ezra Miller will have a small supporting role as a younger version of the famous artist. Harron told Vanity Fair that Miller’s scenes remain in the film, even though their name was not mentioned when the TIFF premiere was announced, as filming had already finished long before this year’s wave of controversy.

“The film was completely finished and wrapped. It might have been different, especially if we were shooting, if there had been bad behavior during that. But this all happened after the film was not only filmed, but edited and mixed and done. I also felt like everybody shot all those things in good faith. Nothing bad happened during our filming, and the film is the film.”

Harron went on to praise Ezra Miller’s performance in the film, noting that the actor was also very kind and professional on set.

So it was even more shocking to Harron when Ezra Miller’s name later started to circulate in the press for less than positive reasons.

“They turned in a completely realized performance. They were very professional and nice to everybody. There was no trouble or a sign of trouble on set. So it was very upsetting and terrible to read what happened later. Reading this stuff was very sad—very sad for everybody involved. Hopefully they are getting help for what sounds like a very, very serious break.”

Mary Harron wants to clarify that even if Ezra Miller stays in the film, she will not condone their behaviour. Harron, for her part, would very much like to see Miller get professional help and hopes that has already happened, as Miller recently said.

“I’m not condoning anything they’ve done wrong. I think it doesn’t matter how talented someone is, if they’ve done anything wrong, they have to face it.”

“I also think that clearly this is not just a young star acting out. This is much more serious. This seems like something that needs a serious intervention, which I hope has happened.”

Dalíland is the closing film of TIFF, which runs from 8-18 September. The film is directed by Harron and written by John C. Walsh.
