MOVIE NEWS – Amazon has ordered the second season of Outer Range, which, if all is true, will have a new showrunner.

 

 

Amazon Studios will soon be on the Outer Range (sorry). In fact, THR reports that the acclaimed sci-fi western series – which you can read a review of here – has been renewed for a second season by Prime Video. There’s also a significant change behind the scenes ahead of season 2, as Charles Murray replaces Zev Borow as showrunner.

Borow remains on board as executive producer alongside Murray, Heather Rae, series star Josh Brolin, series creator Brian Watkins, Kony Krantz and Plan B Entertainment. Brad Pitt is also executive producing Plan B with Dede Gardner, Jeremy Kleiner and Ernes McNealey.

Brolin stars in Outer Range alongside Lili Taylor, Imogen Poots, Tamara Podemski, Lewis Pullman, Tom Pelphrey, Noah Reid, Shaun Sipos, Isabel Arraiza, Olive Abercrombie and Will Patton.

The series centres on Royal Abbott (Josh Brolin), a rancher fighting for his land and family, who discovers an unfathomable mystery at the edge of Wyoming’s wilderness.

A thrilling fable with hints of wry humour and supernatural mystery, Outer Range examines how we grapple with the unknown. At the series’ onset, the Abbotts are coping with the disappearance of their daughter-in-law Rebecca. They are pushed further to the brink when the Tillersons (the gaudy owners of the neighbouring profit-driven ranch) make a play for their land.

An untimely death in the community sets off a chain of tension-filled events, and seemingly small-town, soil-bound troubles come to a head with the arrival of a mysterious black void in the Abbotts’ west pasture. Wild revelations unfold as Royal fights to protect his family; through his eyes, we begin to see how time contains secrets held in the past and unsettling mysteries foreshadowed.

In a separate interview with THR, Josh Brolin also spoke about the series’ future.

“It’s kind of taken on a life of its own, so things changed. When it first got set up at Amazon, Brian didn’t know a lot. He had an idea, but I think it was really based on those first two scripts for the first two episodes. And from then on, it got broken open by a plethora of people. So I think he had some really, really wonderful ideas that were opened up by a few people.”

Outer Range is available to stream on Prime Video. Season 2 has no premiere date yet.
