Lady Gaga “Very Well Suited” for the Role of Harley Quinn, Says Joker 2 Cinematographer

MOVIE NEWS – Joker 2 cinematographer Lawrence Sher says Lady Gaga will “create a similar magic” to what Joaquin Phoenix brought to the first film.

Arthur Fleck gets an accomplice in Joker: Folie À Deux, aka Joker 2. As we previously reported, popular singer and actress Lady Gaga (A Star Is Born) has joined the project to star as Harley Quinn alongside the returning Joaquin Phoenix. It has also been reported that the sequel will be significantly different tonally from the original Joker as it is being made as a musical.

Joker 2 cinematographer Lawrence Sher recently appeared on The Hollywood Reporter’s Behind the Screen podcast and shared a little taste of what fans can expect from the film. Although some fans disputed Gaga’s casting, Sher fully supports it, arguing that she is actually perfect for the role. According to Sher, Gaga will bring something special to the role, much like Phoenix did with her version of the Joker, so pairing the two seems like a recipe for success. From the interview:

“He’s going to be a great fit for the film and he’s going to create a similar magic that Joaquin brought with him. The combination of the two of them is going to be exactly what we’re hoping for, which is exciting, and we’re going to find magic every day on set. Hopefully there’ll be a little bit of craziness as well.” . We like to have a bit of chaos”.

Margot Robbie can be counted as another supporter of Lady Gaga in the role of Harley Quinn. Famously, Robbie played Quinn in several DCEU films, making him synonymous with the supervillain in many ways. But Robbie is also happy to share the role with Gaga, as he feels the character is iconic enough to go from one “great actor to another” and that Gaga will create something unique with the role. As Robbie told MTV News:

“It makes me very happy because I’ve said from the beginning that all I want is for Harley Quinn to be a character like Macbeth or Batman who always goes from great actor to great actor. It’s like someone playing their own Batman , or someone would play their own Macbeth. I feel like there’s not a lot of female characters – Queen Elizabeth I, but beyond what I was given, and it was an honor to play her. I felt like, ‘Wow! Cate Blanchett played Queen Elizabeth I, now I get to play her.” It’s an honor to have built a strong enough foundation for Harley to be a character that other actors can play. And I think she’s going to do something incredibly good with her.”

Todd Phillips is returning to direct the Joker sequel, which he is co-writing with Scott Silver. Zazie Beetz is also reportedly on board to reprise her role from the first film, while new cast members include Brendan Gleeson, Harry Lawtey, Catherine Keener and Jacob Lofland.

Joker: Folie À Deux hits theaters on October 4, 2024.
