Redemption Reapers: Developer Ender Lilies Has Announced its New Dark Fantasy Tactical RPG [VIDEO]

A new dark fantasy tactical RPG is coming soon from Adglobe and Binary Haze Interactive, developer and publisher of the metroidvania Ender Lilies: Redemption Reapers.

Adglobe and Binary Haze Interactive, developer and publisher of Ender Lilies: Quietus of the Knights, have released the first trailer for their next project, Redemption Reapers. The indie game developer and publisher last released a joint game in 2021, and their next project is expected to be released soon.

The new project will be led by Masayuki Horikawa, who previously worked as a writer and director for the Fire Emblem series, including Fire Emblem Fates for the Nintendo 3DS. Drawing on his previous work and using turn-based gameplay as a link, Horikawa and the teams behind the project want to tell a story about redemption and the horrors of war that go into earning it.

Set in a world overrun by the zombie-like Mort, a group of rebels and mercenaries, the Ashen Hawk Brigade, stand against them in hopes of turning things around. As nations fall to the onslaught of the Mort, these grim survivors make no attempt to hide their past as killers and murderers. The first trailer for Redemption Reapers, released on December 13, showed some of the battles and some of the English-dubbed dialogue. According to the developers, voice actors include Kyle McCarley, who voiced precocious android 9S in Nier: Automata, and Lucien Dodge, who voiced DLC fighter Sin Kaske in Guilty Gear: Strive.

The combat, which drew inspiration from other turn-based strategy RPGs such as the recently released Tactics Ogre: Reborn and the aforementioned Fire Emblem series, showed that surprise attacks and chain attacks could be performed with different face buttons, depending on how many a friendly unit surrounds each enemy unit. With stealth and ambush tactics taking precedence in combat on the 3D map, players must adapt to their team’s strengths and weaknesses as they plan a coordinated attack on enemy units and avoid being overrun by hordes of Mort. It is not yet known how many characters will be playable, but players will be able to further customize and upgrade their units’ weapons and armor as they see fit, using loot from battles.

Redemption Reapers is scheduled to release sometime in February 2023 for PC via Steam, PS4, and Nintendo Switch. The planned multiplatform release is similar to what the well-received Ender Lilies: Quietus of the Knights did before it. Whether it will be as successful as it was, or whether other games will flood in 2023, remains to be seen. With its dark narrative and setting to match, Redemption Reapers will be a game worth keeping an eye on as it nears release.
