The Destruction AllStars Development Team Jumped Ship To Microsoft

It’s unusual to see a studio developing one of the first games for a console and helping a rival two years later.

Liverpool-based Lucid Games has developed several games for PlayStation platforms in the past (2012 – Travel Bug, PlayStation Vita; 2013 – Jacob Jones and the Bigfoot Mystery: Episode 1 – A Bump in the Night, PlayStation Vita, with the second episode not on the PS Vita; 2014 – the PlayStation Vita port of iFruit; Geometry Wars 3: Dimensions, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, PlayStation Vita; 2015 – Goat Simulator porting to PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 3; 2018 – Switchblade, PlayStation 4). Looking at the games, it was also surprising how big Destruction AllStars, which came out in February 2021 for PlayStation 5 (and no word on a PC port since then…), was. (We would have preferred a Twisted Metal game, but there’s a TV adaptation in the works, and supposedly, there’s also a game reboot in development…)

So while they had a few iOS and Android outings (and the studio popped up a couple of times elsewhere), Lucid Games was mainly close to PlayStation. Until now, that is: the studio announced on Twitter that the team is helping Rare develop Sea of Thieves: “We’re excited to announce that we are working with Rare Ltd. on Sea of Thieves! It’s been incredible supporting them on their thrilling pirate adventure, and we can’t wait to see where this legendary voyage will take us!”

In another tweet, Lucid Games wrote that they are looking for people to help with their “exciting projects,” so supporting Sea of Thieves won’t be their only job. Are they working on something for Sony and Microsoft simultaneously? Who knows. Rare might want to pass on the pirate baton already because they have another announced project we haven’t heard about since 2021 (Everwild, which was slated for 2024, and which we wrote about back in the day that we were optimistic for a 2024 release because it was in such a lousy position).

Good luck to Lucid Games, who also helped developing Apex Legends, Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, and EA Sports PGA Tour.

Still, she likes puzzle and story-oriented games, like Sherlock Holmes: Crimes & Punishments, which is her favourite title. She also played The Sims 3, but after accidentally killing a whole sim family, swore not to play it again. (For our office address, email and phone number check out our IMPRESSUM)
