We May Or May Not Regret It: When Cage Couldn’t Knock Out Garcia

CINEMA NEWS – Everyone agrees that The Godfather 3 is the lesser part of the trilogy, and fans are still dying about what would have happened if Nicolas Cage could play Vincent Mancini, Sonny Corleone’s lost but suddenly resurgent son. As a reminder: Sonny (James Caan) was the Godfather’s hot-headed son, who was shot dead on the freeway ramp in the first film, and Vincent is his no less hot-headed love child, who will carry on the Corleone empire at the end of K3.

Nicolas Cage begged Francis Ford Coppola, who directed K3, also his uncle, to give him the grateful role of Vincent, but the master chose Andy Garcia. Maybe because he had already pushed his daughter and sister into the film, and together with Nicolas, the production would have really looked like a mafia-like family business. (It is an interesting addition that the girl, Sofia Coppola, was originally described as an actress due to her role in the film, but over time she became an excellent director /Lost Report/).

Andy Garcia otherwise did well as Vincent (nominated for an Oscar®), so he has been begging for decades for a Godfather 4 as well, where he could play the Don as an absolute protagonist. This will probably never happen again.

Cage then, in his grief, became the main character in The Lost World directed by David Lynch, where he gives one of the best, naturally surreal performances of his life. He will soon return as a vampire in the hilarious thriller Renfield, a hair-raising reimagining of the Dracula myth.

Andy Garcia and soon after he appears in the role of a charming Latin man in Book Club – The next chapter, Diane Keaton > the wind blows.
