Sony Interactive Entertainment has to show what the next year and a half to two years of the PlayStation 5 will look like, so that’s to be expected.
Last week, what we had suspected before happened, as it was rumored that Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo would not be attending this year’s E3. Then came the announcement that ReedPop, the event organizers, would be unable to hold the show this year and had to cancel it. We also reported the explanation from a Gamesindustry editor close to the company. Of course, that doesn’t mean there won’t be any games industry shows in June 2023.
According to Jeff Grubb at Giant Bomb, the first half of June will be packed with replacement shows leaving E3. June 8 will bring Summer Game Fest (with The Game Awards organizer Geoff Keighley behind it), June 9 and 10 will bring Keigh3 Days of Play (a sequel to that…), June 11 will bring the Xbox Games Showcase with Microsoft’s (and Bethesda’s) upcoming games, as they have a lot to show, and right after that will be the Starfield Showcase from Todd Howard’s next title. (We’ve written about that before.) And on June 12, we’ll see Ubisoft Forward after Yves Guillemot’s E3, which is canceled this year…
But Nintendo and Sony are not on the list. The big N will almost certainly return with a Nintendo Direct in early to mid-June, as it’s a well-established tradition for them, even if they haven’t had a press conference at E3 for years. On the other hand, Sony has been similarly eccentric for several years. They have a sparse list of games coming out (Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is supposedly coming in September, and that’s it), and Grubb says that Sony will have their show before Summer Game Fest.
It could be where Sony’s current console generation success is decided. Prices should be cut (especially for PlayStation VR2!), and new, strong exclusives should be shown…
