After Thirteen Years, DOOM II RPG Is Playable On PC!

Yes, RPG! id Software’s IP had a small, unusual outing worth remembering.

In 2005, DOOM RPG was released for mobile phones. It’s understandable why the game was born: at the time, the somewhat horror-tinged Doom 3 had a big reputation, and John Carmack had shown how the id Tech 4 engine (first used in Doom 3) had come into its own. They didn’t want to leave mobiles without Doomguy (or Doom Guy). The result was DOOM RPG, a game designed to be a shooter with some RPG elements when no iPhones were on the market. Given the game’s success (of which a team made a PC port last year, nearly seventeen years after the original release), it was only natural that a sequel was made.

Gen.Inc. was behind the PC port of the DOOM RPG, and now they’ve brought the second part, released in 2010, over, and you can find a code-recapped version of the second part on Doomworld. Of course, it needs a bit of work to get it working. You will need to install OpenAL 1.1, and you will also need the DOOM 2 RPG iOS file with the .ipa extension. It can be found on the Internet Archive. Since the game would not run on modern iOS (even though can be found on the Apple App Store), it can be considered abandonware.

The PC port has left touchscreen controls behind, so you must use the mouse and keyboard instead. At first, it seems a little unusual because it’s a dungeon crawler rather than an FPS. Still, you get a unique experience from a familiar franchise, just in a slightly different direction (a much more significant departure than the PS2 port of Quake III Arena, Quake III Revolution, with its… story because it had one).

What will Gen.Inc do next? They’re going to complete the trilogy if they follow the path they’ve been on, and since they’ve already posted a picture of it, they’ve hinted at bringing the Wolfenstein RPG to PC. There was one.

Still, she likes puzzle and story-oriented games, like Sherlock Holmes: Crimes & Punishments, which is her favourite title. She also played The Sims 3, but after accidentally killing a whole sim family, swore not to play it again. (For our office address, email and phone number check out our IMPRESSUM)
