MOVIE NEWS – It is a common belief that it is always a holiday for film fans when Martin Scorsese puts a new work on the table, and Strangled Flowers, already presented at the Cannes Film Festival, is another good example of this. In addition, this may be the master’s last great work, because he recently said that he would like to tell more stories, but he fears that at the age of 80 he no longer has the time.
Killers of the Flower Moon is referred to as Scorsese’s Western, as it takes place in a Wild West setting, albeit in the 1920s. It narrates real events: the tragedy of the Osage Indians, who were murdered by white profiteers for the oil found on their land. The male protagonists of the film are played by two of Scorsese’s favorite actors, Robert De Niro and Leonardo DiCaprio, and the female protagonist is Lily Gladstone. The actress believes that Killers of the Flower Moon is not a western.
“The genre classification could be more like a great American tragedy – the actress from the tribe of Blackfoot Indians clarifies to Empire magazine. – Westerns often depict natives as if they were not people at all, but exotic components of the landscape. Now we are telling a story that depicts things from a human perspective.”
Killers of the Flower Moon is based on David Grann’s book, but Scorsese also did serious preliminary studies. Among other things, he consulted with experts from indigenous communities in order to develop the characters authentically. “Growing up on the reservation in Montana, I myself saw cases where cowboy-like characters fall in love with a calm Indian woman,” explains Gladstone, referring to the relationship between the character he created and DiCaprio‘s protagonist. “This dynamic is very familiar, because it is authentic, taken from life.”
