Nintendo Switch 2 Prices Skyrocket, Yet It Could Smash Every Sales Record!

The Nintendo Switch 2 is shaping up to be an unprecedented launch success, possibly surpassing even PlayStation’s best-ever debut. But is it really worth the hefty price for gamers?

The launch of the Nintendo Switch 2 is expected to hit wallets hard – not necessarily due to the console’s own price, but because of the steep costs of its games. A physical copy of Mario Kart World, for instance, is priced around 90 euros (approximately 33,000 HUF). While one might assume fewer buyers due to these high prices, an analyst argues precisely the opposite, predicting record-breaking demand upon release.

Nintendo recently announced when Switch 2 preorders will reopen in the United States, finally clarifying whether the already considerable base price will see any further hikes.

According to analyst Pelham Smithers from Pelham Smithers Associates, who specializes in the Japanese market, enthusiasm for the Switch 2 in Japan alone virtually guarantees record sales figures. He highlighted that Japanese accounts make up roughly a third of all original Switch accounts, suggesting global preorders might reach approximately 6.6 million units. This would substantially outpace previous record holders like the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5, each of which sold about 4.5 million units in their first two months on the market.

Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa previously revealed that 2.2 million Japanese users have already signed up for the lottery on the Nintendo Store to secure preorder rights. This vastly exceeded company expectations, meaning not all customers will receive their consoles by the June 5 launch date. Interestingly, the Japanese version is priced lower (around $340 instead of $450), but this edition is exclusive to Japan and features menus only in Japanese.

In the United States, preorders faced delays due to trade policies implemented by Donald Trump, but have now finally started again this week. While the console’s price remains unchanged, accessory prices have increased.
