Larian Studios: The Next Game Could Be Smaller Than Baldur’s Gate 3!

Swen Vincke, Larian’s CEO, made a statement to that effect, and we can understand him thinking that way.

Baldur’s Gate 3 was released on Thursday after more than two years of Steam’s Early Access period, and according to SteamDB, the Belgian studio’s game had 427,000 concurrent players, with many finally getting some free time over the weekend, pushing the record to over 700,000. While it is an outstanding result, Larian is still not the biggest Steam release, as Hogwarts Legacy holds the record with 879,308 concurrent players.

It’s almost sure that the new IP based on the Dungeons & Dragons table-top board game (and launched at BioWare) will also score big on PlayStation 5, but Sony isn’t being quite so transparent with the player count. You can bet, however, that it will be in the top 5 of the most-played games list for September overseas and in Europe. Unfortunately, those who prefer Microsoft’s consoles don’t have that much luck, as split-screen co-op doesn’t run well on Xbox Series S. The Redmond-based company requires feature parity, meaning you can’t skip something on the smaller console only to have it on Xbox Series X… so there’s not much chance of an Xbox version until 2024.

Meanwhile, Vincke told Bloomberg that they don’t know what they’re doing after Baldur’s Gate 3 (publisher head Michael Douse tweeted that many of their engineers are now focusing on the Xbox Series S co-op…), but expressed that they’d like to develop more games at once. They want a minor title next because Vincke doesn’t want to work on a single game for six years again. We can understand his statement because you can get tired of working on something all the time with the finish line being far away.

What is certain is that Baldur’s Gate 3 has proved to be a huge success and could well be one of the seminal works of the CRPG genre.

Therefore, it’s okay if something smaller comes from the developers after it.
