The PlayStation 5 exclusive games offering hasn’t expanded reasonably this year, and perhaps it’s no coincidence that it is the case.
On one page of Sony’s first quarterly business report (covering April to June 2023), a section makes the ‘blue company’ situation look suspicious. It says, “Operating income is expected to remain unchanged from the April forecast mainly due to the impact of the increase as mentioned above in sales of non-first party titles and an expected decrease in costs, substantially offset primarily by a deterioration in the profitability of PlayStation 5 hardware mainly due to changes in promotions by geographic region and the sales channel mix, as well as the impact of changes in the launch dates of a portion of first-party titles.”
The last part is relevant to us: so the release dates of a small number of PlayStation Studios games that were previously planned and not publicly disclosed have been changed, and because it’s an offsetting effect: it’s a move that will reduce the revenue results, which is not usually the case with an earlier release of a game. In other words, the release date(s) have been pushed back, so more PlayStation 5 titles will be delayed!
Sony hasn’t written anything about which projects they’re discussing, but it’s anyone’s guess. One can be named: Naughty Dog’s multiplayer The Last of Us (which we’ll just call The Last of Us: Factions for lack of a better, official name) could be one of them, which the studio recently said they need time to share news about. Another idea we have is Twisted Metal. Given that it was made into a TV adaptation, it’s safe to assume that Sony is again dealing with an IP that’s been neglected since the PlayStation 3. It’s rumored that Lucid Games (Destruction AllStars) was developing the game until Sony handed it over to Firesprite. The third possible idea is Stellar Blade. The rest could be something that hasn’t been announced yet…
We’ll have to wait and see.
