The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim: Quietly Remade by Virtuos!

Virtuos has quietly done something that gamers may have been waiting for for years, but let’s not pop the champagne just yet…

It must be getting a little boring how many times Bethesda Game Studios (BGS) has re-released and re-released The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim since its release in 2011. This time it’s happened again, but not in the usual way, as Skyrim has been remastered using Unreal Engine 5, but not in the way you’d expect.

A gamer on Twitter discovered that if we’re a little clever, we can see a remastered version of Skyrim in The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered. He turned on the free camera and was surprised to see that the game includes the area of Skyrim. You can explore major points of interest (you can see High Hrothgar, for example). He says it’s amazing to look at, even though it’s low-res stuff (but that’s understandable because you’re not supposed to see that, so it’s not 4K textures and assets… but it also shows how much attention to detail Virtuos has paid).

Of course, this makes sense since Oblivion’s location, Cyrodiil, is right next to Skyrim in the Elder Scrolls universe. In the original Oblivion, you could have gone to Skyrim if you wanted to, but all you’d end up doing is walking through a bunch of textures without collision detection. This is a huge improvement in comparison. Although it’s not impossible that the exact same thing would happen in The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered if we tried.

Still, who knows what Virtuos might do, but we’ve already reported on how many players The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered has reached in today’s news (and also reported on a bug that partially affected PC players), but given how successful the game seems to be, it wouldn’t be surprising if Skyrim got a similar overhaul. Microsoft would certainly fund it…
