Metroid Dread” Developer MercurySteam Teases Two Secret Projects

MercurySteam, the developers behind the acclaimed “Metroid Dread,” aren’t resting on their laurels—they’re actively working on two new titles. This revelation comes courtesy of Nordisk Games, a minority shareholder in the Spanish studio. Although details remain scant, one of these games may very well be a fantasy-themed project in collaboration with publisher 505 Games.

Founded in 2002, MercurySteam is a Spanish game development studio best known for their contributions to the “Castlevania: Lords of Shadow” series and “Metroid: Samus Returns.” Their most recent release, “Metroid Dread,” soared in popularity, becoming the top-selling game for the Nintendo Switch in October. The studio has also ventured into self-publishing with a free-to-play online action-adventure game titled “Spacelords.”

Nordisk Games reports that MercurySteam is currently immersed in the development of two major, undisclosed projects. One of these is believed to be the aforementioned fantasy-themed endeavor, code-named “Project Iron,” being crafted in tandem with 505 Games. This title is slated for a multi-platform release and boasts a hefty development budget of 27 million euros (approximately 10 billion forints). While specific game details remain under wraps, there are assurances from the developers that it will be of high quality, captivating, and thrilling.

Speculation about the second game is even more nebulous, but there are murmurs suggesting a potential collaboration with Nintendo or an affiliation with the Metroid series. In a recent interview, MercurySteam’s CEO, Enric Álvarez, discussed the rewarding experience of partnering with Nintendo and expressed immense pride in “Metroid Dread.” Álvarez praised the strong rapport they had with Nintendo, lauding their dedication and talent. He also mentioned that they were always receptive to fresh ideas and keen to experiment.

So, while MercurySteam may be tight-lipped about their upcoming ventures, it’s evident they’re diligently working on not one but two games. One being the fantasy project in conjunction with 505 Games, and the other remains shrouded in mystery. We can only hope for more revelations soon.
