TECH NEWS – The Sony PlayStation 5 first debuted in late 2020. It’s been nearly three years since then, and gamers have been eagerly awaiting an update to the PS5, a ‘PS5 Pro’ version.

 

 

The PlayStation 5 has already received several changes over its lifecycle. These include changes to internal specifications, such as Sony upgrading it with new “6nm” Oberon chips. However, these changes have never given the console any performance gains. Essentially, they were minor changes to produce virtually the same console but at a lower cost and with better processes.

The PS5 Pro, on the other hand, represents a massive change in internal specifications, going well beyond the manufacturing process improvements seen on the original PS5.

The leak of the new specs comes from YouTube creator RedGamingTech, who called the upcoming gaming console a “4K ray tracing monster”. Here’s a summary of the recent leak’s claims:

 

• New Custom APU with TSMC 5/4nm Process
• 8 Cores based on Zen 4
• Integrated GPU with 30 Workgroup Processors (WGP) and 60 Compute Units (CU)
• iGPU could be based on RDNA 3 or RDNA 3.5 architecture
• APU could feature 96 ROPs (50% more compared to base PS5)
• Higher CPU clocks at 3.6GHz, along with higher GPU clocks at 2.7GHz
• 16GB GDDR6 Memory
• Potential enhancements to the built-in NVMe SSD

 

PS5 Pro vs PS5: How fast will PlayStation 5 Pro be?

 

The specs mentioned in the above leak are impressive. You’re probably wondering how much quicker the rumoured PS5 Pro will be compared to the base model. RedGamingTech, who are the source of the leak, did some calculations based on these rumoured specs and came up with 23.04 TFLOPS (speculative).

If we take the above number and compare it to the PS5, the computing power has essentially doubled. PS5 has ~10.3 TFLOPS, which is about 123.6% ahead of the speculated TFLOPS of PS5 Pro. So yes, the new Pro is expected to be significantly faster.

With greater graphical fidelity and improved performance, the upcoming console will dramatically change the PS5 gaming experience.

Developers will be fine-tuning the experience when using the Pro in games to take full advantage of the increased computing power.

It’s hoped that the PS5 Pro will be capable of 4K resolution with ray tracing enabled but with much higher FPS numbers compared to the base PS5. Currently, using Fidelity mode in many games gives stunning graphics. However, the FPS sometimes gets stuck at 30. On the Pro, you can see up to 60 FPS or more, even in Fidelity mode.
