Baldur’s Gate III: The Developers at Larian Studios Panicked About the Possible Reception of the Game! [VIDEO]

Although Baldur’s Gate III was a critical success, the development team, Larian Studios, was anxious to see what would happen to the game. The studio’s founder, Swen Vincke, reported that prior to release, there were fears that the game would be riddled with bugs, which would attract poor reviews. They were terrified even when they already knew that they were coming up with high-quality content, as the enormous expectations and technical difficulties together oppressed them.

Baldur’s Gate III has won the hearts of not only gamers, but also critics, and it currently boasts 96 points for both the PC and PS5 versions on Metacritic. This makes the game one of the highest rated creations of 2023 and is ranked 30th in the overall game ranking. Despite what many would think Larian Studios went into the market with confidence, Swen Vincke, the head of the project, admitted that they had serious concerns.

A Dungeons & In a Dragons YouTube interview, Vincke shared that they were afraid of mediocre ratings like 6/10 or 7/10 and that the whole project would fail due to technical issues. They weren’t afraid of the quality of the gameplay or the story, but of possible technical glitches.

It turns out that Larian Studios is not the only one afraid of the frequent technical errors in AAA games, which have unfortunately become common lately. According to Vincke, in the case of an extremely complex system, errors are almost inevitable, which can also affect the enjoyment of the game.

Although Baldur’s Gate III is not without bugs, the game remains enjoyable and the developers are constantly working on fixes. For example, the second major update arrived on August 31st, which improved the game’s performance and expanded Karlach’s story, among other things.

The reception of the game is so strong that it is a serious competitor to The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom for the title of Game of the Year, which also has a score of 96 on Metacritic. It previously looked like Zelda was going to win this title undisputedly, but the success of Baldur’s Gate III has created some exciting competition at this year’s The Game Awards.
