PlayStation Has Tested A New “Soulsborne” Game – But Which One Could It Be?!

Recently, a four-day PlayStation playtest took place for a mysterious game of the genre called “Soulsborne”. Fans are now speculating what the mysterious project…

Fans of FromSoftware’s Dark Souls games are speculating about a mysterious PlayStation playtest. The latter was recently held in the UK. No details about the game were shared beyond the fact that the playtest was advertised for fans of the “Soulsborne” sub-genre of action RPGs. Also that, PlayStation UK hosted the event. Given the enthusiasm of Soulslike fans, it’s perhaps unsurprising that speculation ran rampant.

Predictions include Nioh developer Team Ninja’s next game, Rise of the Ronin, Bluepoint Games’ next project and even a new FromSoftware game.

Big game announcements are rare, especially publicly announced playtests for PlayStation releases. But that doesn’t mean they don’t happen. In 2022, a PlayStation playtest was announced for a racing game set in virtual reality. This playtest was presumably for the VR update of Gran Turismo 7.

The news that a new PlayStation-organised playtest was to be held between 10 October and 13 October understandably caused a lot of excitement and speculation. But as with the Gran Turismo 7 VR playtest, strictly what game is being tested remains a complete mystery. The only clue is that the playtest was advertised as “for Soulsborne fans”. Alternatively, a picture of the box art for Elden Ring, Dark Souls 3, Bloodborne and Wo Long was shown.

Wo Long’s inclusion on the list is what led to the most concentrated speculation. Wo Long is Team Ninja’s recent Souls release. Although it received generally good reviews, it can hardly be considered a vital example of the genre. Therefore, some believe that the playtest refers to a playtest of Team Ninja’s next game, Rise of the Ronin. Rise of the Ronin will be published by Sony for PS5 in 2024. The game was only recently announced at the PlayStation State of Play event last September.

There are certainly other possibilities for what could be a playtest: PlayStation fans are keen to see a sequel to Bloodborne announced, the rights to which are owned by Sony.

Bluepoint Games’ next release after the PS5 launch, a remake of Demon’s Souls, is also a mystery. FromSoftware’s next game is also a possibility. All of these possibilities, however, may be wishful thinking.

However, all this speculation may be in vain. At any given time, there are countless Souls-like games in development. And from a wide variety of exciting developers. It might not be Rise of the Ronin, which is not necessarily a Souls-like game anyway. It might not be a FromSoftware game, or anything related to their previous releases. Still, PlayStation Soulslike fans should look forward to a mystery that will be revealed in the hopefully not-too-distant future.
