Marvel’s Spider-Man 2: Venom Could Get A Spinoff Game?! The Developers Have Spoken!

On the eve of the PS5 launch of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, the game’s narrative director has spoken about the possibility of a Venom spin-off title.

Today marks the official release of the highly anticipated Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. Yesterday, the game’s narrative director was asked about a possible Venom spin-off. As seen in various promotional materials for the game, it seems Venom will play an important role in the plot. The comic book hero has already had solo adventures in both the comic book and cinematic space. So it stands to reason that the popular villain-turned-antihero could star in his own game.

Spider-Man 2 is the highest-rated game in the series to date, so things already look to be looking good for the PS5 exclusive.

Early sales figures are not yet available. But the game could also break records, with both previous games in the franchise having sold over 33 million copies.

In an interview with Insider, Jon Paquette, chief narrative officer for Spider-Man 2, spoke about the possibility of a Venom spin-off game. When asked directly about the topic, Paquette was coy. He said that the team is “waiting to see how the fans react”. This will, of course, only take place after the development team has had some time to relax and take stock after the game’s release. Perhaps a possible spin-off could take a back seat to Insomniac’s next, potentially more mature outing, The Wolverine.

Paquette went on to say that the team drew inspiration from all kinds of Venom stories from Marvel Comics. But then they created their own story. Insomniac seems to have done an excellent job, as even Venom’s co-creator praised the design.

Insomniac seems to have got Venom right, so it wouldn’t be surprising if the character gets his own standalone adventure in the game universe.

Spider-Man 2 is tied for the highest-rated Insomniac game of all time. Every game so far has been well-received by fans and critics alike. This includes, of course, Miles’ solo game, Spider-Man: Miles Morales.

Maybe Venom doesn’t need his own game. Maybe in the next instalment of the series, players could simply switch between Venom, Miles and Peter at will. This is similar to how switching between Spider-Men works in the new title. That way, Venom could still get his own adventure within the larger Spider-Man 3 narrative.
