Blizzard: Between 4-400 Hours, Any Long Game Can Be Made

The company, which is now owned by Microsoft, has not ruled out porting World of Warcraft to consoles.

In an interview with The Verge, Blizzard president Mike Ybarra said that the team is looking forward to a new era, one that will include a greater emphasis on freedom: “I think the way [Phil Spencer] is approaching building teams and focusing on culture and enabling creative freedom is going to give Blizzard a lot more of a sense of being an independent studio than ever before. That’s what I really mean when I talk about a new era of opportunity, of empowerment, of serving the players better than ever before. We’re not afraid to create new IPs. We’re not afraid to disrupt models […] that could be somebody who has an idea for a four-hour experience or a 400-hour experience”.

And he told Bloomberg that he wouldn’t rule out a new StarCraft, but it might not be RTS. He needs someone with the vision and passion, and Ybarra would give his blessing to make it happen. (Just don’t end up like the cancelled FPS StarCraft: Ghost…)

And at BlizzCon, Gamesradar caught up with Holly Longdale, who is now executive producer of World of Warcraft and vice president of Blizzard. Formerly the designer and executive producer of the EverQuest franchise, she has a lot of experience in keeping MMORPGs alive, and believes there’s a good chance that the Warcraft MMO, which has been running for two decades, will eventually make its way to consoles (or, let’s face it, Xbox…):

“Of course! Yeah, we talk about it all the time. I think we’re pretty well positioned, which is why we talk about it. To your earlier point, the approach will probably be different for a console audience. Right now we’re focused on the Worldsoul saga. But if that comes up, we’ll look at things again, but, man, we’ve got enough on our plate right now. We’ve got these three expansions and we’re so excited about them. But yeah, of course. It would be very disingenuous to say that we’re not, like… of course we’re talking about that. We are Microsoft now,” says Longdale.

Hoorayoptimism.

Still, she likes puzzle and story-oriented games, like Sherlock Holmes: Crimes & Punishments, which is her favourite title. She also played The Sims 3, but after accidentally killing a whole sim family, swore not to play it again. (For our office address, email and phone number check out our IMPRESSUM)
