CINEMA NEWS – Marvel had a hard time finding a new direction after Endgame. Perhaps the solution could be the return of street heroes like Echo.

 

Marvel’s next-generation heroes are clearly too many. Some of the old bikers are still here, but the franchise is preparing to launch several new teams in addition to the Avengers. The Avengers had two de facto leaders, Captain America and Iron Man. Their influence sometimes drove Earth’s mightiest heroes in opposite directions. With Echo, Marvel could get a new, unexpected central character. He won’t lead the new team, but he could lead the franchise by example.

After such mishaps as Secret Invasion, Marvel has announced that it wants to change the way it produces serials. They are calling for an end to miniseries and a return to multi-season series. They’re bringing back the showrunner instead of a murky network of creators and producers. These decisions hint at a return to the glory days of Netflix’s Defenders universe, with Daredevil: Born Again resurrecting your favorite hero. The Echo and the newly introduced Marvel Spotlight banner seem to follow that trend.

Marvel announced Echo in 2021, shortly after Alaqua Cox made her MCU debut as Maya Lopez in Hawkeye. The series was part of the studio’s first Disney+ day. Not long after, delays and behind-the-scenes problems plagued the production. Here’s a brief timeline of these release date shifts:

• At Comic-Con 2022, Marvel announced a summer 2023 release date for Echo.
• In December 2022, lead writer Marion Dayre stated on the Writer’s Panel podcast Ben Blacker that the series could wait another year.
• Marvel confirmed their claim and announced a November 29, 2023 release date for Echo.
• Marvel has brought forward its TV series to 2023, so Echo will premiere in January 2024.
• Jeff Sneider of Above the Line claimed that the first season of Echo was planned for eight episodes, but was cut to five after Kevin Feige found them “unpublishable”. The article containing the quote was taken down, so it remains questionable.

Echo has also suffered three slippages despite the shooting schedule ending in August 2022. There have been no reports of reshoots, except for Sneider’s speculation, which was again removed. A large-scale series sitting in the barrel for so long suggests strange things. The possible release of the first trailer has changed the conversation around the Echo.

 

The Echo trailer had a big impact on everyone

 

The tone of Echo’s trailer is striking. It opens with Vincent D’Onofrio’s beloved character, Wilson Fisk, brutally beating a man to death in front of a child. Some of the gory deaths look like they were ripped from a John Wick sequel. It would be hard to show someone the trailer without context and convince them they’re watching a Marvel series. The last label contains the following sentence: “Set your Disney+ profile to TV-MA to stream”. This could be passed off as a genuine explanation for the weird UI and kid-friendly settings, but it feels more like bragging. The sentence should almost end with “If you can handle it”.

Most people who talk about Echo mention how different it is from Marvel’s usual offerings. It’s not like Secret Invasion or Loki. But it’s exactly like Daredevil. Marvel is positioning Echo as a bridge between the current standard of Disney+ series and the new Netflix revival they’re entering. Charlie Cox’s Daredevil joins D’Onofrio’s Kingpin in the series. Echo was specifically said to set up the events of Daredevil: Born Again. Instinctively, Matt Murdock will be at the center of the new era. He is the hero fans have been clamoring for years. The appearance of No Way Home ended with a standing ovation. Echo offers another solution.

Echo centers on Maya Lopez, a deaf Native American woman from a Choctaw family. To that end, Alaqua Cox is the franchise’s first deaf and Native American star. The series will be directed by Sydney Freeland, a Navajo filmmaker who worked with Hawkeye directors Bert & He took Bertie’s place. After a core cast of white men, with the occasional accent from a lady or person of color, the new Marvel protagonists now have much more diverse backgrounds. Echo can be the apotheosis of this concept and the guiding thread of a small army of future role models.

Echo could be a transitional phase of the MCU. It can also be intended and implemented as a transitional element to move the franchise from one period to another. Its constant delays, rumored recasting, and focus on older characters point to this possibility. The effect of the trailer is transformative can take this direction. The potential power of the miniseries could be a turning point for Marvel. Echo doesn’t have to be a recurring character. Tying him into the larger multiverse scumbags could weaken him. It should be a milestone in the franchise, starting a series of smart, personal stories featuring diverse and unique characters.

Echo’s effect will therefore affect the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe, but we will probably only know this in January 2024.
