Marvel’s Spider-Man 3: Perhaps The Most Unusual Leak Of All…

When you look at the story of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, Insomniac Games’ plan might seem a little strange.

Before we go any further, it’s worth noting that there are going to be spoilers for the story of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, so anyone who hasn’t played the story of Miles Morales and Peter Parker, which was released on PlayStation 5 this fall, is advised not to start the next paragraph, but to stop here. We warned you…

It has been revealed that Insomniac Games has canceled a Spider-Man game that would have been cooperative and used a live service model. We’ve also learned that Insomniac has submitted the third installment as a two-part concept. The studio plans to release the first half of the game sometime around the holiday season of 2027, with the second half following a year later. It follows that the first half will surely end with a big cliffhanger. If Peter Parker retires, then Miles Morales and Silk could star in the first half, while Peter could return in the second half to take on Doc Ock (Dr. Octopus). The other possibility is to have a big reveal or death in the first half to keep players on the edge of their seats, so Insomniac could borrow an idea from the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).

This allows for two main villains to play the same role for the same amount of time. The first could focus on the Green Goblin, so he wouldn’t be neglected like Venom was in the second half of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. After the Goblin, the main villain could be Doc Ock, who is a personal rival to Peter Parker. In terms of gameplay, we shouldn’t expect any major differences. But according to the leak, a multiplayer mode is coming along with the first half of Marvel’s Spider-Man 3, and a bundle that includes both single-player elements and multiplayer could be made with a 2029 release. Maybe they’ll take a few things from the cancelled project called The Great Web.

Another reason for the halving is cost. Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 cost $350 million to make, and if a big game was the third, Sony would have to spend even more. But if it’s split into two parts, it might sell twice as many people who want to see the story. Maybe the second half will focus on Silk, or maybe it will just be one big DLC that Insomniac refers to as Part 2 within the studio…
