Fallout 4: Xbox Series’ Next-Gen Update Didn’t Escape the Bugs!

PC gamers may be upset that their mods won’t work (because the Script Extender isn’t working properly), PlayStation gamers may be upset about PlayStation Plus (the update isn’t essentially free for them), and now Xbox gamers have been “hit” as well.

The Xbox line also received the next-gen update for Fallout 4… with a bug. (Bethesda wouldn’t be Bethesda if it didn’t have a bunch of bugs…) For them, this means that Quality Mode doesn’t work. That means they can’t have a higher resolution, lower frame rate mode because Quality will still run at 60 fps as if they had selected Performance. Digital Foundry editor Thomas Morgan also confirmed on Twitter that it is currently not possible to enable Quality mode on the two Xbox series consoles after the Fallout 4 next-gen update.

The best way to play Fallout 4 on PC right now is on GOG, where you can undo the patch. It’s more complicated on Steam (see the Nexus Mods link below), while it’s two clicks on CD Projekt’s platform. On Steam, you have to learn how to use the command line, download 22 gigs from SteamDB, delete several files that the update adds, then run Steam offline and delay updating Fallout 4 every time you bring Valve online. On GOG, however, it’s much easier.

Although you will need the GOG Galaxy launcher to do this, all you have to do is go to the game’s Settings menu (it’s next to the launcher button), go to Manage Installation > Configure > Installation, uncheck Automatically update to latest version, and choose which patch you want to revert to.

Fallout 4 is currently available for purchase on GOG for around $10. It’s easy to transfer your saves from Steam, so you can find them in the same folder as [username]\Documents\My Games\Fallout 4\Saves. After that, it’s worth playing there until Bethesda finally realizes that they screwed everyone (!)…
