Deadpool 3: How Can Wolverine Live When We Saw Him Die In 2017’s Logan…?!

MOVIE NEWS – The first trailer for Deadpool 3 (Deadpool & Wolverine) shows Wade Wilson on a TVA mission, but one theory says he’s not the only TVA recruit…

Despite meeting his doom in 2017, Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine will join the MCU in Marvel Studios’ upcoming Deadpool 3 (Deadpool & Wolverine). A theory tries to explain how this is possible. Hugh Jackman has played James “Logan” Howlett since 2000’s X-Men. That is the mutant Wolverine. He will also return in 2024’s Deadpool & Wolverine. This made him one of the longest-tenured superhero actors of all time.

While the return of Wolverine in the MCU’s fifth phase is highly anticipated, it was unclear where Deadpool & Wolverine would fit into the 20th Century Fox X-Men timeline, as audiences had already witnessed Logan’s emotional death.

Before his return in Deadpool & Wolverine was announced in September 2022, Hugh Jackman retired from the role of Wolverine. 2017’s Logan was his last big release. Laura, aka X-23, played by Dafne Keen, was introduced in Logan. She is the biological daughter of Wolverine. He urged her to get him to safety across the Canadian border while being pursued by Logan’s clone X-24. X-24 trumped Jackman’s original hero. After an epic battle, he killed her. And Reynolds and Jackman promised not to mess around with this powerful ending. So the question arose: how can the character return in Deadpool & Wolverine?

Both Deadpool and Wolverine have time-travelled in Fox’s X-Men universe

The first trailer for Deadpool & Wolverine reveals that Deadpool will be recruited by the Time Alteration Authority (TVA) in Phase 5. Popular theories are that his actions in the final moments of 2018’s Deadpool 2 brought him to TVA’s attention. As Wilson used Cable’s time travel technology to correct several past mistakes. Among them was Deadpool saving Vanessa, killing the version of the X-Men known from the first Wolverine movie. (As well as killing off a version of Ryan Reynolds before he could even star in 2011’s flop Green Lantern…) This time manipulation may have caught TVA’s attention, but it wasn’t the first time it’s happened.

As recently as 2014’s X-Men: Days of Future Past, set during a global war in 2023, Wolverine’s consciousness was sent back to 1973 to change the course of history and prevent the outbreak of war.

While not as funny as Deadpool’s time travel in Deadpool 2, Wolverine changed the entire timeline. In fact, he brought several deceased X-Men back to the present. Among them, Jean Gray and Scott Summers Cyclops. This would undoubtedly have caught TVA’s attention, which could easily explain Deadpool 3’s inclusion.

MCU theory says Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine will return as his original self in Deadpool 3

Ever since Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman promised not to scrap the beautiful ending of 2017’s Logan, the question has been raised as to whether the original Wolverine version will return at all. It is possible that Jackman will not play the initial iteration in Deadpool & Wolverine, but a version of the character.

However, the idea of Wolverine brought in by TVA due to his time travel seen in X-Men: Days of Future Past means that this character will be the same version that Hugh Jackman portrayed in nine previous projects in the 20th Century Fox X-Men franchise.

Logan takes place in 2029. The world is bleak for mutants, as no new mutants have been born in 25 years. A catastrophic accident at Xavier School wiped out the X-Men. Deadpool & Wolverine takes place before these events. This allows the original Wolverines to return without referencing the events of Logan. However, this can cause even more confusion. After all, Wolverine in Logan did not mention the adventures taking place in the multiverse. No doubt Marvel Studios will fully explain this. Still, many will be happy to see Jackman playing the same version of his beloved character.

What mission is TVA sending Deadpool and Wolverine on in the MCU?

While most of the Deadpool 3 trailer looks like Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool attacking and killing various members of the TVA, the trailer opens with Wade Wilson seemingly being recruited for a special mission. These assignments are given by Matthew Macfadyen’s Paradox. He could have surrounded 20th Century Fox’s Wolverine with a similar offer.

While Deadpool is getting a new outfit courtesy of TVA, Wolverine’s yellow-and-blue costume from the comics may also have come from TVA, which explains why he has the outfit here but loses it to Logan. However, the pair seem to be in the will take an adventurous journey during an upcoming project.

It’s unclear precisely what TVA wants from Deadpool and Wolverine. But it looks like they’ll be spending a lot of time in the Void at the end of time. Among the theories was that TVA was “weeding out” Fox’s X-Men universe. He’s sending Deadpool and Wolverine to clean up the remains, or that TVA wants to transform the Void into a version of Marvel Comics’ Battleworld before 2027’s Avengers: Secret War. Deadpool 3 is scheduled to hit theaters on July 26, 2024. In the meantime, it remains uncertain what exactly TVA wants to do with these new MCU heroes…
