Spider-Man: The Great Web: Leaked Details From The Cancelled Insomniac Game [VIDEO]

The game would have featured Spider-Gwen… if the project had gone ahead.

Insomniac Games had been working on a long-rumored co-op multiplayer Spider-Man game, but Sony decided that their live service idea was too ambitious, so they backed off a bit. The cancellation of this title is the result, but Naughty Dog also had to cancel The Last of Us Online. However, the massive ransomware attack on Insomniac resulted in many details of the studio’s projects being leaked online.

One of them was Spider-Man: The Great Web, for which Insomniac even made a trailer. It was leaked, we’ve embedded it, and in case Sony deletes it from YouTube, we’ve included a download link so you can watch the trailer anyway, which tells us that the game was nearing the end of development and probably close to release. It was based on Marvel’s Spider-Man duo, with similar visuals and combat, and familiar locations.

It would have been a five-player co-op PvE game, with each player controlling a different Spider. The first character from the Spider-Verse would have appeared in the form of Spider-Gwen (=Ghost-Spider, Spider-Woman), and it’s not known if the team would have been assembled from the Spider-Verse or if these characters would have existed by default in the Insomniac universe. In the video, they can be seen traveling through portals, a feature taken from the studio’s previous game, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart. The villains are also mostly taken from the main games (Venom, Mysterio, Doc Ock, Sandman, Venom, Vulture, Scorpion, Electro, Rhino).

Yuri Lowenthal, also heard in the games in the trailer, says this: “New York City. There’s nothing in the world I wouldn’t do for that big, beautiful apple. One minute you’re scarfing down a slice from Vinnie’s, the next you’re stopping a supervillain prison break. Sometimes you can do it as a lone wolf, but you’re much better off with some friends. I’ve seen the Sinister Six before… but never so methodical, so brutal. I don’t think I’ll be enough this time, guys. But together, we just might be.”

It’s a shame that the game is no longer a reality, but maybe Marvel’s Spider-Man 3 will have a co-op mode.
