System Shock Remake Is About To Get A Big Update

The 1.2 patch brings several new features, and the best part is that Nightdive Studios will be releasing the update within a few days, so if you’ve been missing out on System Shock Remake, now might be a good time to catch up.

For example, Nightdive Studios is preparing a female playable character. Stephen Kick, the studio’s CEO, told PCGamer at the Game Developers Conference before the patch was announced that the gender choice was a stretch funding goal for them on Kickstarter about 7-8 years ago. Because of this, the studio knew they would have to patch it into the game after System Shock Remake was finished, but the developers knew it wouldn’t have an immediate impact on gameplay because it was an option that would just add to the immersion of the game. The model has been reworked and the voices are different, but it’s still a small but effective change because it’s a first-person game where our protagonist doesn’t speak and we only see them in the opening and ending scenes…or the game-over scene if we screw up.

What Kick and Larry Kuperman (Nightdive’s Director of Business Development) didn’t talk much about what the updated ending in patch 1.2 would entail, but they both talked about the game being worth replaying. According to them, it’s a reaction to the original final boss fight of the game, where we got a VR puzzle/shooter section with different mechanics than what we were used to before. Kick says they received a lot of criticism for the fact that players would collect items throughout the game to prepare for the final battle and then lose everything because they only had one weapon left to use in a mini-game.

So that was fixed. It’s a question of how the mutants have improved in combat, but there will also be a system that will easily show you where to go so you don’t get lost in the many corridors. The update will be available for PC on April 11th.
