MOVIE NEWS – Sam Raimi got fans excited after he described what it would look like to make a fourth Spider-Man movie with Tobey Maguire…
Sam Raimi has said he would “love” to return to the Marvel Universe to direct Spider-Man 4. However, there are specific details the director would need to figure out first. Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy (starring Tobey Maguire as Peter Parker) helped usher in the cinematic phenomenon of the superhero genre. Spider-Man and Spider-Man 2 are still considered among the best superhero movies ever made. Fans could see great acting from villains like the Green Goblin (Willem Dafoe) and Doctor Otto Octavius/Octopus (Alfred Molina). Although Spider-Man 3 was clearly the weakest film in the trilogy – with a questionable treatment of the beloved villain Venom – fans still wanted a sequel.
Now, speaking to The Wrap, Sam Raimi gave fans hope when he said he would be open to a fourth Spider-Man film.
Raimi made it clear that he “has no plans yet.” He also said, “But I would love it!” The acclaimed director then explained how he would go about making a fourth part and what major narrative challenges he would face.
“I think if we were to make a fourth ‘Spider-Man’ film, we’d probably have to figure out the journey that Tobey Maguire his character would be going on, and what obstacles he had to overcome to achieve that growth personally. And I hope that the villain would be chosen based on a representation of that obstacle.”
Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 4 has yet to be officially confirmed, but the rumours are growing
While it’s exciting to know that Sam Raimi is considering a fourth film, it’s far from definitive confirmation. In the past, Raimi has been very open about not having an official green light for the film yet. Speaking to CBR earlier this April, Raimi was asked about rumors that he and Tobey Maguire had previously worked together on a new installment.
While there have always been rumours (mainly from the optimistic desperation of fans) that Raimi would return for Spider-Man 4, speculation reignited in 2021 when Tobey Maguire recast the MCU’s iteration of Peter Parker in Spider-Man: No Way Home with Tom Holland and Andrew Garfield.
The film brought Maguire and Garfield’s respective Peter Parkers to the MCU as Tom Holland’s Spider-Man blew up the multiverse after messing with Dr. Strange’s magic. All of this means that Spider-Man 4 would likely take place in Raimi’s Spider-Man universe after the alternate Peter Parkers return to their original worlds at the end of the film.
Raimi hasn’t brought his Spider-Man style as a director for quite some time. But he has since returned to the superhero genre and is rumoured to be back in the future. Raimi’s last superhero outing was 2022’s Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, in which the director incorporated his horror past into a multiverse-jumping story. In addition to the return of Spider-Man 4, Raimi is also rumoured to be returning to the MCU to direct Avengers: Secret Wars, which is currently slated for release in 2027. However, nothing has been confirmed yet.
