Experience a Blizzard Classic Right in Your Browser!

Since it’s a relatively old game, it’s understandable that it’s so easy to make it work in your browser, but then again, don’t spend too much time on it…

This idea has already surfaced in 2019, but that version is now offline, so maybe we’ve forgotten in those five years that Diablo could be run from a browser. But the concept is back, as GalaXyHaXz and the devilution team worked together to rework the source code of Blizzard’s classic, which was also on the PS1, to port it to WebAssembly, and then brought it all to life on GitHub.

Fortunately, it’s not that hard to get Diablo running in your browser, although you will need to upload one of the files, DIABDAT.MPQ. If you have it (e.g. from the GOG version, which you can get for pennies these days), then upload it. If not, there’s a shareware version (who remembers that?) and you can still get started, although this version has limitations as only the Warrior character class will open and you can’t talk to NPCs, so it’s worth digging that file out… unless you just want to try out the browser experience.

If you want to play from your phone (not everyone has a PC or laptop nearby), you can, but you’ll have to use the touchscreen controls. In any case, browser play isn’t a new topic, and if we’re not thinking of the 2019 Diablo attempt, Google Stadia previously required a Chrome browser.

There’s no need to worry about a game of this caliber running smoothly in your browser, because what required a much more powerful computer 27 years ago can now be done with the graphics capabilities of your processor (if you have one), so you don’t have to rush out to the store for an Nvidia GeForce RTX 4090. You can access Diablo online at this website.
