Odyssey: Images from Blizzard’s Cancelled Survival Game!

Unfortunately, the only way to describe the game is “what if…?” because Blizzard is not going to do that anymore.

In 2023, the birds started chirping about a survival game that Blizzard was working on. At the time, it was rumored that it would be similar to Rare’s Everwild and that Fable Legends was one of its inspirations. The project was based on the idea that it would be a survival game based on a fairy tale. But in January of this year, we heard that Odyssey had been canceled, as Blizzard’s new owner, Microsoft, had cut the development team.

The studio had reportedly been struggling with insurmountable problems with the game’s engine, which had been in development for seven years and had been tinkered with by the team since 2017. Now, however, some images of the broken game have surfaced on Imgur. These images first appeared on the Russian Facebook, or VKontakte. It’s a multiplayer-based game, easily recognizable as a survival title.

The player has several tools and weapons, and there is also an inventory full of other items and resources. There’s also a status indicator, so you can see how high the character’s temperature is, if they have any buffs or debuffs, how hungry they are, and how tired they are. It feels quite customizable, so everything from character models to equipment, clothing, skill points, and levels were already in the project, which had a cartoony style similar to Palworld.

Based on the interface, players could have used more abilities, and since there is a killfeed (what and who the player has killed), there probably would have been PvP elements. One of the respawn points was 822 steps away based on the images, so the map looked pretty productive. In addition, the equipment was left behind when the player died and could be respawned, but the life of the equipment would have been shortened. This is another typical survival MMO gameplay element.

Too bad the game is dead.
