Until now, the Japanese genius and his studio did not own the rights to Sam “Porter” Bridges, but that has changed, and there is no longer any “top-down” say in what happens!
Shortly after leaving Konami (who made P.T. unavailable on the PlayStation Network, stopped development on Silent Hills, and left Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain unfinished…), Hideo Kojima re-established Kojima Productions, which was then taken over by Sony. He also began work on his first post-Konami game, Death Stranding, published by 505 Games.
Yes, but 505 Games owned the rights. But now, on the fifth anniversary of Death Stranding’s original PlayStation 4 release, the game has suddenly appeared on Xbox, and the studio has said that Kojima Productions is bringing its award-winning IP to more platforms and a wider audience, and the sudden Xbox release is proof of that. Incidentally, the game has been available on PC since 2020, with an expanded director’s cut version coming to PlayStation 5 and PC in 2022. The game is currently available on PC for half price on both Steam and the Epic Games Store.
This is not the first IP that 505 Games has canceled this year. Remember: In February, we reported that they had reached an agreement with Remedy Entertainment to keep the rights to Control, Control 2 and the multiplayer spin-off FBC: Firebreak could be handled by Remedy (yes, Annapurna Interactive also stepped in to finance the deal, as Remedy also broke with Epic Games Publishing, which is no surprise: we also reported that Alan Wake 2 still hadn’t made them any money. ..).
Death Stranding 2: On The Beach is still in development. It will be released by Sony for PlayStation 5 sometime in 2025. Since nobody has a say in the future of the IP anymore, Kojima will surely make some crappy stuff with it…
