TECH NEWS – This is how the US tech company wants to keep up with the iPad, because the Alphabet subsidiary says we can have a more unified experience.
Companies are always looking to improve the way users interact with a seamless software experience regardless of what device they’re using, so they don’t have to relearn how to use a browser on mobile and PC, for example. This is the idea that Google is trying to reinforce by trying to merge Android and Chrome OS into one so that it can at least compete with Apple’s iPad (at least in software terms; the hardware is different).
Android Authority has reported that Google intends to take a different tack, to steer people away from Chrome OS and towards Android. Chrome OS is Internet-centric and it wants to integrate this into the Android ecosystem, following Apple’s example, as iPadOS offers a very similar experience to iOS. And Google is not the only one planning to streamline functionality across devices. This will mark a significant shift in the company’s operating system strategy. Chrome OS may eventually disappear as Android takes its place.
Back in June, there was talk that Chrome OS would take some elements from Android, but the impact of merging the two platforms will be much greater. Google has already started laying the groundwork. For Android, it has started to support browser add-ons, and it is also working on running Linux applications, and for those who might be working on an external display, Google is working on improving support for that. In essence, Google is trying to create a desktop PC-like experience on Android.
One of the weaknesses of Android has been productivity, and the implementation of the aforementioned functionality will improve that. Although Google has not officially talked about a joint future for the two platforms, it is certainly at an advanced stage.
