Adrien Brody’s Missed Opportunity: The Joker Role He Dreamed Of [VIDEO]

MOVIE NEWS – “That would have been a dream role,” Adrien Brody says. While many fans see him as an ideal choice for the Joker, the truth is Brody once pursued the role of the iconic Batman villain. The Brutalist star even auditioned for Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight.

Warner Bros. is currently working on a cinematic reboot of Batman for the DCU, which will need to coexist with Matt Reeves and Robert Pattinson’s version. This has reignited speculation about who might play Bruce Wayne and his infamous nemesis, the Joker. Names like Willem Dafoe and Adrien Brody often surface in such discussions, and Brody himself has opened up about the character.

Brody revealed that he once vied for the role of the Joker, but it was a tall order competing against Heath Ledger, who many fans regard as the definitive “Clown Prince of Crime.” “I didn’t come close (…) but I felt like I fit the role perfectly. It was a dream character. Ledger’s performance was extraordinary, something we’ll never forget,” Brody shared during a recent interview on the Happy Sad Confused podcast.

Praise for Christopher Nolan’s Batman Vision

The 2002 Oscar winner for Best Actor explained that bringing such a complex character to life would have been a dream come true—not just because of the Joker’s iconic status but also because Christopher Nolan was directing. “He brought a profound vision to the character. Nobody else was doing anything like that at the time. Christopher Nolan’s work and what he offered the actors were absolutely groundbreaking,” Brody said.

Still Open to Playing the Joker

Does this mean Brody wouldn’t take the role under another director? Not at all. “I’d do it if I felt I could bring something valuable to the role and if it were interesting enough for me, as these projects take a lot of time. Villains are always fun to play,” Brody said in another interview several months ago. “I just don’t get offered those kinds of roles. But if the opportunity to bring a comic book hero or villain to life arose, I wouldn’t be opposed to it,” he added.

Whether James Gunn considers Brody for the Joker remains to be seen. Personally, he might suit a more mystical role in DC’s darker, fantasy-driven universe. Brody’s latest film, The Brutalist, has been well-received by critics and audiences alike, despite its over-three-hour runtime. The movie is set to release in theaters on January 24. In the meantime, The Dark Knight is available for streaming on Max.
