Netflix Boss Reveals Why David Lynch’s Mysterious Final Project Will Never See the Light of Day

MOVIE NEWS – David Lynch’s passing marked the loss of one of Hollywood’s most unique creative voices. Yet, the world came close to witnessing one final masterpiece from the legendary filmmaker in the form of a Netflix limited series. Following Lynch’s death, Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos revealed how the visionary pitched the idea to the streaming giant, which they eagerly embraced. Unfortunately, the ambitious project never came to fruition.

David Lynch passed away on Thursday at 78, leaving behind one of the most influential legacies in cinematic history. As fans revisit Lynch’s groundbreaking works—such as Twin Peaks, which has surged in popularity on platforms like Amazon and iTunes—Sarandos shared his sorrow over the loss and lamented that viewers will never get to experience one last piece of brilliance from a mind like Lynch’s. Posting on Instagram, Sarandos reflected on the early days of Netflix’s partnership with Lynch.

“In my earliest days at Netflix, back when we were just mailing DVDs across the U.S., I had an unforgettable experience meeting one of my all-time favorite filmmakers at his home. We aimed to stock every film available on DVD, but one of my favorites, Eraserhead, wasn’t commercially accessible. I reached out to David and requested a meeting. Sitting at his dining room table, we struck a deal for Netflix to bulk-purchase Eraserhead and produce a DVD collection of his visionary short films.”

Sarandos also shared how Lynch once screened for him a three-hour rough cut of Mulholland Drive. He went on to explain how the pitch for the Netflix series unfolded.

“David and I only connected a few more times after that. But years later, he came to Netflix to pitch a limited series. It was everything you’d expect from a David Lynch project—mysterious, daring, and filled with risks. We jumped at the chance to collaborate with him. Sadly, the project was derailed by COVID and some health concerns, but we assured him we were ready to proceed as soon as he could.”

Sarandos, like many others, recognized Lynch’s unparalleled approach to storytelling. The filmmaker refused to conform, whether it was in his writing, directing, or acting. According to Sarandos, every interaction with Lynch was an exhilarating experience, and the mystery of his final project will always remain.

“The last time I spoke to David was just as electrifying as the first. He visited me at home with Laura Dern, his muse and dear friend. We had a long, inspiring conversation about films, art, life, and, oddly enough, my windows (he loved my windows). David Lynch was a fearless genius. He didn’t want his work to be understood—he knew that was impossible, and that was part of the magic. His body of work is astonishingly bold, visionary, and artistic. I’ll forever wonder what he envisioned for his final project.”
