AI’s Dark Side: ChatGPT and a Criminal Plot to Explode a Tesla in Las Vegas

TECH NEWS – “It’s a game changer”: The United States’ first criminal case involving artificial intelligence has linked ChatGPT, Elon Musk, and a failed bomb plot targeting a Tesla Cybertruck outside the Donald Trump Hotel. The attack could have led to disastrous consequences.

Nearly two years ago, the world encountered its first AI designed with the alarming goal of human destruction. Although it was merely an experiment, the very concept underscored the urgent need for restrictions on artificial intelligence use. Unfortunately, such concerns materialized in Las Vegas, where a criminal used ChatGPT, a Tesla Cybertruck, and a high-profile hotel as the basis for a violent scheme.

Using ChatGPT to Plan a Tesla Explosion

According to TechSpot, a man leveraged the AI assistant to orchestrate an attack on Elon Musk’s vehicle. The perpetrator, Alan Livelsberger, an active-duty member of the U.S. Army Special Forces, used both his expertise and ChatGPT to plot a bombing of a Cybertruck outside the Trump International Hotel on January 1. Investigations revealed that Livelsberger spent over an hour consulting the AI for guidance on acquiring explosives, navigating legal loopholes, and sourcing weapons.

AI’s Role in the Investigation

Livelsberger further inquired about firing projectiles to detonate explosives, seeking detailed information on the velocity required to trigger an explosion. Despite these chilling questions, neither ChatGPT’s system nor its safeguards flagged his queries. This oversight drew sharp criticism from law enforcement and has positioned this case as a pivotal moment in understanding AI’s potential misuse in criminal activities.

This marks the first documented instance of ChatGPT being used for such a crime in the U.S. Livelsberger’s interactions bypassed safeguards without needing sophisticated evasion tactics. OpenAI expressed deep regret and affirmed its commitment to fostering responsible AI use. They intend to revise their policies to prevent such occurrences in the future.
