John Gonzalez has returned to Obsidian Entertainment after fourteen years, but that means Fallout: New Vegas will continue, or should we say the opposite?
Since leaving Obsidian, Gonzalez has worked on Guardians of Middle-earth, Horizon Zero Dawn, and its sequel, Horizon Forbidden West. Gonzalez is working on Fallout: New Vegas, and in a brief message on LinkedIn, he wrote that his new position is creative director at his old-new workplace, later adding that he is looking forward to an exciting time at Obsidian, but that Fallout: New Vegas 2.
In 2022, Josh Sawyer took to Twitter to detail just how much Gonzalez had done for Fallout: New Vegas: “John Gonzalez was the lead creative designer (effectively ‘writing lead’) on Fallout: New Vegas. He wrote the main plot from Chris Avellone’s starting point (shot in the head, dropped in a grave in the desert) to my ending point (2nd Battle of Hoover Dam). He created and wrote House, designed the families of The Strip, and wrote many major characters, including House, Caesar, Benny, Yes Man, and Vulpes Inculta. He also wrote Ricky and Stella in Honest Hearts and all of the Survivalist/Randall Clark logs.
That’s no small amount of work for a pretty prolific game. It makes it easy to understand why fans were looking forward to (or at least hoping for) Gonzalez’s return to Fallout after an absence of over a decade (he was also the acclaimed narrative director of the Guerrilla Horizon games). But a Fallout: New Vegas sequel is something that many would welcome and have been clamoring for for years.
It’s a shame. Maybe not Fallout: New Vegas 2, but who knows what else is in the works at Microsoft’s studio. Maybe a new Fallout? We dare not say Fallout 5, as Bethesda Game Studios would probably not let the studio do that, but with the success of the Fallout series, Microsoft is looking to capitalize on the huge interest in the games.
