The Grand Theft Auto V current-gen update has been released for PC, but fear not: if you’re playing the older version (because you’re on an older configuration, for example), you can still access it!
If you have the Rockstar game on Steam, you will now find two versions of the game in your library. If you’re looking for the old one, it’s called Grand Theft Auto V Legacy, and the new one is called Grand Theft Auto V Enhanced. There have been over 187,000 concurrent players of the new edition, mostly because it was given away for free to all GTA V owners. So it’s not going to be a bestseller on Valve’s digital platform, where it should be pointed out that it’s not in such a rosy position considering the reviews!
It is in the mixed category in terms of reviews, with only 56% of them positive. Technical and performance problems, accounts difficult to migrate, disappointment with the improvements. Not many people like the enhanced version (which is 23 gigabytes smaller!), but many complain that the frame rate is limited to 120 FPS, whereas the original had no such limitation. Rockstar didn’t expect this level of interest, so they say that many online account migrations may require additional time. Banned or suspended accounts are not eligible.
Grand Theft Auto V Enhanced, meanwhile, made it into the Steam Top 10, but Grand Theft Auto V Legacy remains available separately on Valve’s platform. The latter was played by about 122,000 people, which is down from recent results, but not for nothing, as the former was played by more than 115,000 people at one point. For a while, the Enhanced game had a much higher number of players because of the “new game effect”, but then people left because the reliability and consistency of the old version was so much more important.
At least PC players got what the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series have been getting for a while. It’s fair that they kept the old version. A lot of people could learn a lesson from that.
