TECH NEWS – AMD’s latest upscaling technology can run quite a few games with a small tool, and it’s a pleasant surprise…
The debut of FSR 4 could spell an exciting future for the future of upscaling technology, as we’ve seen a huge performance boost over the older FSR version 3.1. However, given that AMD has only made FSR 4 available on the Radeon RX 9070 graphics cards, and support for early titles is quite limited, this may be a bit of a letdown for gamers. However, modders are trying to bridge the gap with OptiScaler, which allows FSR 4 to run in any game that supports Nvidia DLSS version 2 or higher or Intel XeSS.
This tool removes the boundaries between upscaling technologies and their exclusivity. OptiScaler is essentially a middleware between scaling technologies and games, redirecting upscaling requests to another supported technology. This is done by implementing API methods, and OptiScaler basically mimics the functionality of DLSS, XeSS and FSR, so the game thinks it is still using the original method. But what kind of performance do we get with the upscaler? You can find out in the video embedded below.
So Cyberpunk 2077 basically got FSR 4, which delivered over 60 FPS at 1440p in CD Projekt RED’s last REDengine game on the Radeon RX 9070 XT. That game doesn’t even support FSR 3.1, so considering that, the OptiScaler is a very impressive performer!
Currently 22 games are supported: Atomic Heart (tested on DLSS input), Avowed (DLSS), Baldur’s Gate 3 (DLSS input, needs DX11 . exe; but not worth it due to lower performance than Vulkan without upscaler during tests); Black Myth: Wukong, Control, Cyberpunk 2077 (FSR or XeSS input, crashes on Windows 10), Deep Rock Galactic (DLSS), Dragon’s Dogma II (FGType=nofg setting required), Final Fantasy VII Rebirth (DLSS), Ghost of Tsushima (FSR3), Hitman: World of Assassination (DLSS/XeSS), Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered, Jusant (DLSS), Kingdom Come: Deliverance II, Lies of P (DLSS), Red Dead Redemption 2 (DirectX 12 required), Senua’s Saga: Hellblade 2 (DLSS), Silent Hill 2 Remake (DLSS), Shadow of the Tomb Raider (DLSS), Tokyo Xtreme Racer (DLSS), Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves Collection (DLSS), The Witcher 3 Next Gen (XeSS).
Great idea!
