Perhaps the reason for the “butt sculpting” wasn’t because NetEase found it exciting, but because they were “told so”.
Disney-owned Marvel Comics has announced that it is bringing back the most raunchy thing from the 90s. Namely, the Marvel Swimsuit Special: Friends, Foes & Rivals #1 will be released in July and promises to include new costume designs for Marvel Games and NetEase Games’ popular multiplayer game, Marvel Rivals, coming soon. Marvel’s Swimsuit Special was a notorious money pit. Let’s face it, it was aimed at hormone-swollen young boys in the nineties, and it might be a logical (or financially advantageous) decision to try it again, since the Internet is even more horny.
In the original comics, Marvel’s women wore bikinis and the men wore “swallows,” but they did have a plot, and the revival will continue that tradition with a sprawling story by Tim Seeley and Tony Fleecs, drawn by superstar artist Nick Bradshaw, and starring Earth’s most powerful fashion designer, Janet Van Dyne, aka the Wasp. One of the many oddities of the swimsuit specials was that many of the men wore their own logos on their underwear. Could the same thing happen on Marvel Rivals?
When the second season of Marvel Rivals was released, players noticed (and we wrote) that the male characters had bigger butts than before, but over time it was revealed that some female characters had become more shapely as well. Given how much NetEase relies on the sex appeal of Marvel characters and the… hunger of the player base, the move seemed understandable, but maybe it makes sense that everyone will be wearing slightly… tighter underwear this summer.
In any case, Marvel Rivals is a popular game, and it’s no coincidence that Blizzard’s rival, Overwatch 2 saw a drop in players after the launch of NetEase’s product, which was not a one-off!
