The new system software update becomes available today for all PlayStation 5 users, so it’s worth updating as soon as possible.
The update’s headline feature is Audio Focus. This setting enhances immersion by offering various presets that amplify quieter sounds to match your audio preferences, delivering a clearer and more detailed experience when using headphones. It also improves accessibility for a wider range of auditory experiences. Once activated, you can choose from multiple presets that help emphasize in-game dialogue, subtle sound effects like footsteps and rustling grass, or even chat audio — creating a more immersive soundscape.
To enable the feature, go to [Settings] > [Sound] > [Volume] > [Audio Focus]. It’s also accessible from the Control Center, allowing on-the-fly adjustments mid-game.
There are four focus types to choose from:
- Boost Low Pitch: amplifies low-frequency sounds like engine roars and rumbling
- Boost Voices: enhances speech, character voices, and mid-range audio
- Boost High Pitch: emphasizes high-pitched audio such as footsteps or metallic clangs
- Boost Quiet Sounds: strengthens all low-volume sounds across a wide frequency range
Each preset supports three intensity levels (low, medium, high), and you can also fine-tune the left/right audio channels independently. Note: Audio Focus only works with headphones connected via USB or analog jack. It does not support HDMI connections through TVs, AV receivers, or soundbars.
To celebrate PlayStation’s 30th anniversary, Sony has also brought back the classic console UIs — PS1, PS2, PS3, and PS4 — for a limited time. Thanks to overwhelming community demand, these nostalgic styles have been reintroduced so players can personalize their PS5 home screen. The feature is called Appearance and can be found in the Settings menu.
At least Sony listened to the fans — the retro look was a hit… but why remove it in the first place?
