Compared to what we saw at the end of 2024, Sony has left something out of the retro look they’re bringing back, and there’s really nothing stopping them.

The PlayStation 5’s retro themes are back, but the PS1 launch animation released last year for the console’s 30th anniversary is missing. Last year, we wrote about how Sony released a PlayStation 5 update that allowed gamers to customize aspects of the console’s operating system based on different console generations. This included the PS1 startup animation as a new startup sequence, as well as different themes based on PS1, PS2, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4 or 30th Anniversary that could be applied to the home screen and other areas.

Now Sony has brought back the themes for the consoles, but the PS1 startup animation is gone. However, it may be the most iconic, as it still sounds memorable to this day when it boots up. However, the retro themes retain the sound effects, meaning that depending on which theme the player applies, the PlayStation 5 UI sounds will be replaced with sounds reminiscent of that console.

It’s possible that since the PS1 animation mentioned that it was the 30th anniversary of PlayStation, Sony decided to remove these elements because it’s no longer 2024. Many fans have praised the company for adding the new startup sequence to the console, not only for the nostalgia, but also for the limited customization options offered by the PlayStation 5. The smartest move would be for Sony to simply redo the animation without mentioning the 30th anniversary, 1994, or 2024. That would be good for everyone.
