For the first time, Gears of War is coming to PlayStation. Gears of War: Reloaded, a remastered edition of the original title, has been announced with a release date and price: launching on August 26 for Xbox Series, PC, Xbox Cloud Gaming, Game Pass, and PS5 at $39.99.
Microsoft has just rocked the gaming world with the announcement of Gears of War: Reloaded — a modernized version of the 2006 original, fully remastered and optimized for more platforms than ever. This marks a monumental step for the franchise, as it will be the first Gears of War title ever released on a PlayStation console. Scheduled for release on August 26, the game will be available on Xbox Series, PC, Xbox Cloud Gaming, Game Pass, and PS5, priced at $39.99.
“Gears of War: Reloaded is a tribute to one of the most iconic franchises in gaming. With 4K resolution, 120 FPS, and multiplayer that supports cross-play and cross-progression, this is the definitive way to relive the game that started it all”, stated Microsoft via Xbox Wire. “As the 20th anniversary of Gears approaches in 2026, we’re reflecting on what the series means: unforgettable stories, forged friendships, and epic moments. Reloaded opens that experience up to more players than ever before.”
Technical enhancements and expanded content
Developed by The Coalition in collaboration with Sumo Interactive and Disbelief, the game bundles in every feature from the Gears of War: Ultimate Edition, promising the most comprehensive version of the original yet. “Owners of the digital Ultimate Edition will gain instant access to all post-launch downloadable content at no extra charge”, the developers confirmed. This includes the bonus campaign act, all multiplayer maps and modes, and a full roster of classic characters and cosmetics unlocked through gameplay progression.
Beyond the promised 4K visuals and 120 FPS performance, the remaster introduces HDR support, VRR (Variable Refresh Rate), improved post-processing effects, enhanced shadows and reflections, and advanced anti-aliasing. Even more impressively, the single-player campaign has been reworked to eliminate all loading screens entirely.
“From smoother framerates to sharper details, every element has been fine-tuned to bring the original into the present with the clarity and immersion today’s hardware demands”, the studio explained. “No matter where you play, you’re getting the best version possible. Reloaded offers platform-specific features that take full advantage of each device’s power — faithful to the original, upgraded for modern systems, and built for all players.”
No Microsoft Account Needed — But Still Useful
According to Microsoft, Gears of War: Reloaded represents the most technically advanced edition of the iconic shooter to date — for both solo and multiplayer gameplay. “Reloaded is built for co-op — whether split-screen or online. The Campaign allows for two-player co-op, while Versus Multiplayer supports up to eight players.” Crucially, players will not need a Microsoft account to play.
That said, those who do sign in with a Microsoft account will unlock added benefits. “A Microsoft account enables full cross-platform functionality”, the developers added. “You’ll be able to carry your Campaign and multiplayer progress across devices, and send invites to friends across platforms — from Xbox to PlayStation, or Steam to Xbox.”
Gearing Up for E-Day
Players can already wishlist Gears of War: Reloaded on Xbox, PC, and PS5, with pre-orders coming at a later date. This remaster serves as a thrilling prelude to the highly anticipated Gears of War: E-Day — a title with no launch date yet, but one that already has fans hyped thanks to an intense and cinematic reveal trailer.
The premise of the upcoming game is especially gripping: fans will relive the terror of Emergence Day through Marcus Fenix’s eyes. “Set fourteen years before Gears of War, war heroes Marcus Fenix and Dom Santiago return home to confront a horrifying new enemy: the Locust Horde. These grotesque subterranean monsters erupt from the earth to wage war on humanity.”
