MOVIE NEWS – “One trailer and you’ll say: Oh my God, I have to see this.” Director Chad Stahelski stokes the hype for John Wick 5, promising a bold new direction and a story that breaks away from the saga’s established formula.
A few weeks ago, nothing was certain, but it’s now official: John Wick 5 is happening. While the initial announcement simply stated that Chad Stahelski, Keanu Reeves, and the producers were happy with what they had, we now have a glimpse of what awaits us, thanks to the director of the upcoming Highlander remake starring Henry Cavill.
“The story was basically wrapped up. John Wick 5 won’t be a sequel.”
In comments shared with Empire, Stahelski revealed that John Wick: Chapter 5 (a title that may still change) will chart new territory: “The John Wick saga is pretty much done. So the only way to make a fifth film was to tell a completely new story involving the character. It won’t be a follow-up with the High Table. John’s already dealt with his grief—this will be something very different. Everyone will see the trailer and say: ‘Oh my God, I have to see this!’” promised the director.
That’s certainly intriguing. But the question on many minds is: how does this new direction tie into the end of John Wick: Chapter 4? As you’ll recall, the fourth film ended with Keanu Reeves slumped, wounded and weak, on the steps of Paris’s Sacré Cœur Basilica—followed by a shot of his tombstone. Is he dead? The ambiguity has sparked countless fan theories.
The John Wick Universe Still Has Plenty to Offer
There’s no official release date yet for John Wick: Chapter 5, and Stahelski remains busy with other projects, including the long-awaited Ghost of Tsushima movie adaptation, which has gone quiet for months. But fans have plenty to keep them entertained in the meantime:
- Ballerina – a spin-off set after the third film, featuring John Wick in a supporting role.
- Caine – a solo project with Donnie Yen reprising his role from Chapter 4.
- An animated prequel exploring John Wick’s infamous “impossible assignment.”
- Under The High Table – a series connected to the aftermath of the fourth installment.
Stahelski specifically points to the last two as crucial: “We want to experiment a bit, explore some narrative threads, and use them as testing grounds for ideas in John Wick 5.” In the meantime, John Wick: Chapter 4 is available for free on RTVE Play.
