The future of Destiny 2 has been laid out: two expansions every year, one of them in collaboration with Star Wars. The Year of Prophecy brings players The Reaches of Destiny and The Deserters, delivering on the new support model teased last year.
This week, Bungie delivered on its promise by unveiling all the key details about Destiny 2: The Edge of Fate in a lengthy livestream. This expansion is one of the most ambitious yet—it marks a new direction following the close of the ten-year narrative arc that ended in 2024 with The Final Form.
The Reaches of Destiny is the first of two new releases forming the Year of Prophecy, with the second being The Deserters. As leaks had suggested, the first expansion arrives on July 15, alongside a major systems update. The second is set for release in winter, with a dedicated preview coming in September. These are smaller in scale compared to previous expansions, but they’re still packed with content.
Two Medium-Sized Expansions Every Year
Destiny’s Reaches (July 15) centers around the Nine, mysterious cosmic entities that have intrigued players since the original Destiny in 2014. It takes players to Kepler, a new patrol zone built with Metroidvania-style mechanics and intricate puzzles. The story will be fragmented, with quests unlocking as rare items are collected.
Launching the same day is a significant core update:
- Armor 3.0 with fresh stats and a revamped gear set system
- A customizable content and reward tab
- (Later in the season) A permanent firing range
The Deserters (December 2) will get its own showcase in September, but Bungie has already revealed a crossover with Star Wars and Lucasfilm Games. Each class will receive themed armor ornaments inspired by Darth Vader, Kylo Ren, and General Grievous, and we’ll reportedly meet characters who will play major roles in the game’s future. The DLC will also shift the tone and gameplay considerably, revisiting some of the franchise’s oldest narrative threads.
This marks the beginning of Destiny 2’s revamped content roadmap: two expansions per year, each tied to a season, and two major free updates between them—similar to the popular Into the Light.
Pre-orders are now open across all platforms. There’s a standard edition of The Reaches of Destiny, a Year of Prophecy bundle with both expansions, and an Ultimate Edition that includes additional cosmetics. The Collector’s Edition is also available on the Bungie Store, either standalone or with previous content included.
