PlayStation 5: Could Trump Tariffs Lead to Price Hikes in the US? [VIDEO]

It’s shocking—and practically unheard of—for a console generation to see multiple price increases. Forget about discounts, those days seem long gone.

The PlayStation 5 has already seen two price hikes outside the United States—first back in 2022, and then again just a month ago. Now it looks like American gamers may be next in line. On April 1, marking the start of Sony’s new fiscal year, CFO Lin Tao confirmed the company is seriously considering shifting the cost of upcoming tariffs—amounting to 100 billion yen—onto US consumers.

Hiroki Totoki, President and CEO of Sony, also acknowledged that the company is weighing the option of moving some PS5 production to the United States. According to Totoki, manufacturing locally is a viable and efficient alternative. Currently, PS5 consoles are assembled across multiple regions, and the idea of adding US-based production is now being actively considered.

It’s likely that PlayStation Plus subscriptions in the US will also become more expensive, following a price increase outside the country a month ago. Given the underwhelming PlayStation Plus Extra and Premium lineup for May, US customers might soon face steeper subscription costs as well. There’s speculation that Sony might try to win some market share from Xbox by keeping hardware prices steady—especially after Microsoft raised its own prices earlier this month. Still, as Mat Piscatella, Managing Director and games industry analyst at Circana (formerly NPD Group), puts it: “No one really knows what the next move will be.”

Just like Nintendo and every other player in the gaming industry, Sony has multiple contingency plans ready, depending on how the tariff situation plays out. Microsoft has already made its move, and it’s likely just a matter of time before Nintendo and Sony follow suit.
