GTA 6 Development Hasn’t Been Going On Nearly as Long as We Thought

While it might feel like GTA VI has been in the works forever, a former Rockstar developer has revealed that it actually started much later than most fans assumed.

Everyone felt the sting when GTA VI was delayed to May 2026—but let’s be honest, it was probably Rockstar Games’ smartest decision. At least we got that second trailer, which turned out to be jaw-dropping. Rockstar later confirmed the footage was a mix of cinematics and gameplay, all recorded on a standard PlayStation 5.

It’s clear that years of hard work have gone into the next Grand Theft Auto, but contrary to popular belief, its development hasn’t taken as long as many thought. According to a former Rockstar developer, the game began development in 2018—even before Red Dead Redemption 2 hit shelves. That means the project was already in motion while Rockstar was still putting the final touches on its Wild West epic.

Some fans assumed the game had been in development since the release of GTA V over a decade ago, but the reality is far more recent—and promising. When GTA VI finally launches next May, there’s a good chance Rockstar will already be deep into production on its next open-world title. Whether it’s GTA VII, a new Red Dead entry, or an entirely different IP, something is surely brewing.

There have also been long-standing rumors of a GTA IV remaster, and with GTA VI now stepping away from a Fall 2025 release window, maybe Rockstar will use that slot to surprise fans with a return to Liberty City.

The wait for GTA VI has definitely been lengthy, but based on what we’ve seen so far, it’s shaping up to be well worth it—and that’s before we even get a real look at open-world gameplay. A little more patience won’t hurt.
