MOVIE NEWS – He survived the first Suicide Squad only to die horrifically in the sequel. Yet, against all odds, he might still return. At least, that’s what the actor behind him hopes for.
We’re less than two months away from the release of a brand new Superman film, which aims to reboot and establish a fresh DC cinematic universe—one Warner Bros. desperately hopes will resonate better with audiences. Despite previous struggles, the success of Peacemaker raises hopes that characters from the old DCEU could reappear in this renewed DCU. Captain Boomerang, a member of the Suicide Squad teams seen in David Ayer’s and James Gunn’s films, could be one of these returning faces.
“Just because you died doesn’t mean…”
Fans of both Suicide Squad movies will recall Jai Courtney’s memorable portrayal of Captain Boomerang, although his fate dramatically changed between films. While he emerged alive after battling Enchantress in Midway City during the first movie, the second outing brutally ended his story on the shores of Corto Maltese, where he was shredded by helicopter blades. James Gunn clearly intended his film to be ruthlessly violent, using Boomerang to demonstrate the lethal stakes.
Despite this, Jai Courtney recently revealed in an interview that he expressed his disappointment upon reading the script, prompting an intriguing response from the director of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3: “I told him, ‘Come on, man! He’s Boomerang!’ And he replied, ‘You know, rules aren’t always set in stone. Just because you died here doesn’t mean you’re gone forever, right?’ (…) So I’m keeping hope alive. Deep down, I’m praying we’ll get to see more of Boomerang,” shared the Australian actor.
Though currently just a hopeful wish rather than concrete plans, a potential return wouldn’t be entirely surprising. In DC Comics, Captain Boomerang is one of The Flash’s most iconic adversaries, yet his screen portrayal has remained relatively minor so far, essentially functioning as a side character. He is also one of the Suicide Squad’s most recognizable members, and with no confirmed upcoming Special Force X projects, anything remains possible. If they return, maybe he’ll be part of the team again.
