CD Projekt RED’s Mission: Why the Studio Make RPGs Only

“We tried it and it didn’t work,” say the developers at CD Projekt RED. The studio has decided to embrace its true calling, confirming that it will keep creating games like The Witcher 3 and Cyberpunk. CD Projekt RED is devoted to open-world RPGs and has no plans to branch out into other genres.

CD Projekt RED has long been known as a leader in the world of narrative-driven, open-world role-playing games. Titles like The Witcher 3 and Cyberpunk 2077 highlight the Polish studio’s mastery of deep storytelling, player freedom, and impeccable detail. After years in the industry, the team has come to accept that they’re at their best when creating RPGs—and they have no interest in changing direction now.

Sticking to Their Core Values

In the official AnsweRED podcast, co-founder Marcin Iwinski and CEO Adam Badowski outlined the studio’s philosophy for the decade ahead. While the idea of exploring new gameplay features or even entirely different genres is tempting, CD Projekt RED knows it would come at the cost of quality. Their mission remains crystal clear: to make the very best open-world RPGs.

“In everything we do, we’ve learned that precision is everything. Sure, we’re tempted to do more and try new things. We tried it, but it didn’t work out. We have to focus all our energy on what we do best. That’s our plan: to make top-tier, narrative-driven open-world RPGs. That’s our niche, and that’s where our focus will stay,” Badowski explained (via VGC).
