The Battlefield community is buzzing with speculation about the next installment in the series. After the recent Battlefield Labs test, fans are debating what new features and changes might be in store. For longtime players, the class system has always been a core part of the franchise’s DNA. While some appreciate the idea of more freedom, others fear it might ruin what makes Battlefield unique.
Criticism Over the New Class System
David Goldfarb, who served as the lead designer on Battlefield 3 and Bad Company 2, voiced his concerns on social media. He argued that DICE’s current direction—letting any class use any weapon—undermines the essence of the franchise. “Battlefield is a game where choices matter,” said Goldfarb.
“This just seems to water that down, saying, ‘Well, they won’t be as good with this weapon.’ But that’s not what Battlefield is about. The series was built on classes and a rock-paper-scissors system that gave those choices real weight. Taking that away… it’s just not right. And I say this as someone who implemented a similar system in Payday 2, but even there you couldn’t have everything,” he explained.
In a recent update, DICE said their goal is to keep classic roles alive while giving players more ways to customize their loadouts. The new system will balance customizable elements like weapons with class-specific gadgets, and more details will be revealed during the official summer presentation. In the meantime, players will be able to provide feedback on these changes and help fine-tune features like the destruction system in Battlefield Labs.
