MOVIE NEWS – The live-action sequel to How to Train Your Dragon is already in the works, and director Dean DeBlois hints that some original stars might return, possibly even actors who only voiced characters in the animated films. However, the biggest question is Cate Blanchett’s comeback, now cast into doubt after her announcement that she’s stepping away from acting.
Speaking to Gizmodo, DeBlois—who helmed both the animated and live-action versions—shared that he’d love to see not just the main cast return, but also a few of the original voice actors in live-action form. Blanchett voiced Hiccup’s mother, Valka, in the second film, and the director would be thrilled for even a cameo. Still, the Oscar-winner recently told Radio Times she intends to quit acting, as there are “many other things in life” she wants to pursue.
Jay Baruchel and America Ferrara, who voiced Hiccup and Astrid, have been replaced in the live-action adaptation by Mason Thames and Nico Parker, as they’ve aged out of the teenage roles. Blanchett’s involvement is now very uncertain, but DeBlois assures fans the script is actively being written and everything is falling into place.
BoxofficePro predicts that the live-action How to Train Your Dragon could open to a $100 million weekend in North America due to huge anticipation.
